Character Information:
Name: Bean
Canon: Ender's Saga
Canon Point: Ender's Shadow, between chapters 23 and 24 (after the final battle, before Bean's return to Earth)
Age: 7
Reference: here and here
Setting:
In 2060 AD, Earth was attacked by an insectoid race from deep space known as the Formics (informally as the Buggers). In not one, but two attempts at Formic Invasions, the Earth was devastated until finally the queen ship was destroyed. Right away, the International Fleet sent ships towards the Bugger Homeworld. It would take generations for the ships to reach their destination, but the Fleet decided to use that time to find and train commanders to lead the ships into the final battle. It is for this reason that Battle School was founded.
A space station orbiting Earth, Battle School recruits the brightest of Earth's young minds and teaches them military strategy, both intellectual and practical, in the hopes of graduating the best candidates on to Command School. Another, hidden purpose of Battle School is to prevent these bright young minds from leading armies against the International Fleet once the Formic Wars end and Earth decided it no longer needs unification.
In this time, scientific research led to the discovery of a genetic key that would enhance intelligence at the cost of longevity. Deemed too dangerous, the research was destroyed and its discoverer fitted with a device that would cause him to have a panic attack if he even thought about his old studies. Still, illegal testing was done with stolen embryos to create genetically superior children. Bean is the sole survivor of these experiments.
The technology of the "Enderverse," as these novels are called, isn't too far stretched from today. The biggest technological advancements (artificial gravity and faster than light communication) were taken from the Formics after the Second Invasion, and are kept secret from the general public to prevent panic. In addition, there are space ships and space stations, terraformed asteroids, magnetic whips as police weapons, and cars that follow magnetic lines in the road like high-tech railway cars. There are holographic displays and personal computers called desks, and clothing with sensors in it used to track peoples' movements (the latter is really only used to keep track of the students in Battle School as they move around the station).
Personality:
Bean's philosophy is best described in the following excerpt from the book (bold added):
He is rarely emotional, but that doesn't mean he's a robot. Before his first battle with Dragon Army he was so scared he couldn't move, think, or even take a shit. When, in the end, he is reunited with the family he never knew he had, they say a bible verse together and he breaks down crying. Bean saves his emotions for the critical moments when they're actually worth something, or when he otherwise can't help it.
Bean is cold, but not unfeeling, and constantly analyzing everything. His top concern is survival, and just below that is understanding the inner workings of his environment, with the ultimate goal of determining his place within it. Sometimes that place is on the fringes or in the background, but when he allows himself to be, Bean can be prideful and want to take a leadership position over everyone else he deems to be too stupid to lead. When he put together the roster for Ender's army at Battle School, he wanted to be put in charge of a "toon" (platoon), and it irked him when he wasn't, even though he understood the reason why (said reason being that he was the youngest soldier there and no one would follow a six year old, no matter how smart he may be). Eventually he gets a squad to command, but that's only after he's proven his worth in several battles.
Bean speaks plainly, never saying anything unnecessary. Though sometimes he can ramble on: if he makes a discovery while speaking, he'll keep talking to flesh it out. He doesn't have friends, he has people he knows and speaks to if need be. The person he was closest to, the person who gave him a name and accepted him when he was on the verge of death, was murdered trying to defend him. He has severe trust issues, especially with adults or authority figures. He doesn't like anyone to know anything about him that he doesn't know himself.
Upon being told the situation in Keeliai, Bean will be disbelieving at first because it goes against everything he knows and all his (albeit limited) life experience. He won't argue with what he's told, rather take everything in coolly for further consideration based on his own observances. He isn't very spiritual, so the point of being in between life, dreaming, and death won't have very much meaning to him beyond what he can see, feel, and do. If he feels alive and functions as though he were, well, then to him he may as well be alive no matter what anyone else tells him.
Appearance:
Bean is small for his age, a product of both his genetic differences and the fact that during the first few years of his life he was severely malnourished. He is genetically Greek, so he has dark curly hair and an olive complexion, though he has spent several months indoors without sunlight and is therefore rather pale. He has built up some muscle in his training at Battle School, but considering the state he was in before then, that isn't saying much.
Abilities:
Bean is the smartest person in the room. Period. He soaks up information like a sponge; reads, writes, and thinks at a level far advanced for his age; has an eidetic memory; and is constantly learning. His memory is so perfect he can remember things from when he was eight or nine months old. At four years old, having received no formal education, he could already read and write, plus he picks up new languages "the way other children picked up stones." By the time he's six years old, he knows I.F. Common (which is basically English), Dutch, Spanish, French, and German.
In addition to his intellect, Bean's intuition is heightened. He always knows when something's wrong. His heart beats faster, he becomes anxious. He doesn't always know what is wrong, but he knows something is. He trusts his instincts, because his instincts have kept him alive.
Inventory:
A black and grey uniform. Futuristic looking.
Suite:
Metal Sector. Coming straight off a space station, that would best fit the aesthetic Bean is used to. Anything more than one floor he would consider extravagant. (Really, even the one floor suite is likely to be more than he would say he needs.)
In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
After it's over, really, finally over, and they've seen Ender again, Bean returns to the room Colonel Graff gave him away from the barracks. His face is dried and itchy from crying. He can count on one small hand the number of times in his life he's cried, but he thinks this time he's earned it. It's been a delayed reaction, the sinking in of the fact that just days before, they ended the war with the Buggers. That these small hands and this tiny voice commanded brave men and women light years away to sacrifice their lives for the good of humanity. That they successfully wiped out Bugger life on all of their planets. That he had a part in genocide to save millions.
He wonders what Sister Carlotta would say, whether the Buggers count in the eyes of God. But she's the one who sent him to Battle School in the first place, so Bean figures she knew from the start what she was getting him into.
And what now? Now he prepares himself for the wars to come on Earth. Now he watches the Polemarch and his men make their move and tries to predict where he'll fit in in the coming chaos. Now, more immediately, he tries to accept the fact that Nikolai is his actual brother, and that he has parents and a family waiting for him in Greece. He's never had a family outside of Poke's gang or Dragon Army, and those hardly count to anyone who isn't Bean. Not that he particularly cares what counts to anyone else.
Leaving the room again, he heads for FleetCom's library. Now's the time to start learning Greek.
Network:
[Bean waited a long time before posting to the Network. At first he was unsure who exactly was watching. Is this like the desks at school? Would he have to make a fake post to prevent whoever is in charge from learning anything he did not want them to know? Or was it innocent, just a means of communication or entertainment? Either way, Bean saw no real interest in it.
Until he discovered the cafés, with their anonymous hookups. This, he decided, would be the perfect opportunity to give the Network a try. He hangs around the café for a few days, looking in, buying something to drink, but never signing on. Then finally, he makes his move.]
So they have us on the back of a turtle. Slow and steady wins the race, they say, but where is the rabbit? What shore are we swimming towards, and where was the starting line?
[He signs off, satisfied with his post, and waits to watch the responses. It's as much a fact-finding mission as anything, and he's interested to see who will respond and what they might have to say.]

Personality:
Bean's philosophy is best described in the following excerpt from the book (bold added):
No point in getting emotional about anything. Being emotional didn't help with survival. What mattered was to learn everything, analyze the situation, choose a course of action, and then move boldly. Know, think, choose, do. There was no place in that list for "feel." Not that Bean didn't have feelings. He simply refused to think about them or dwell on them or let them influence his decisions, when anything important was at stake.
He is rarely emotional, but that doesn't mean he's a robot. Before his first battle with Dragon Army he was so scared he couldn't move, think, or even take a shit.
